Crawl Space Organizing in Vancouver and Victoria

Does your Vancouver or Victoria home have a crawl space? If so, are you making the most of it? Our team of professional organizers is here to show you how that narrow, awkward space under the first floor of your home can be a storage gold mine!

It can be intimidating to look at a crawl space and imagine how useful it can be, so if you’ve got a crawl space that is not being used let us help bring out the potential in that wasted space.

Assessing the Space

Each home is different, as is each home’s crawl space. Some have doors you can walk through while others are accessed from a trap door/ladder in the floor. Some are spaces where you will literally need to crawl around in (hence the name), while others may allow you to stand up, and some will have dirt floors, while others will be concrete.

Once we have determined that the space is usable, our team of professionals will develop a plan to make the most out of your crawl space. Depending on your home’s layout, your crawl space may be needed to access certain systems, like wiring, plumbing, and HVAC. We will plan the best storage system for your crawl space to ensure easy access to your belongings, without blocking these systems.

To Shelve or Not to Shelve?

Crawl spaces can range in height from 36”- 60” (3-5 feet), and the height will determine whether or not shelving will be an option for you.

Metal shelving is often the best option, as they are heavy-duty yet slim enough to fit narrow spaces. Adjustable shelving like this Easy Connect Rack is a great option, as it can be customized to fit your space. Our handyman will install the necessary shelving or racks in your crawl space.

Bins for the Win

It’s no secret that Vancouver and Victoria are wet, so it is imperative to ensure that your belongings are protected from humidity and moisture, which could result in mold.

For any storage in your crawl space, you’ll want to use lidded or air-tight plastic bins to ensure your belongings stay dry, dust-free, and free from pests that may find their way into your crawl space. Using bins of the same size makes stacking a breeze.

We will find the best bins to suit your storage needs and space.

What to Store

We suggest storing the least used items you own in your crawl space, such as holiday decorations, camping gear (tent, dishes, cutlery, awnings, tarps), kayaks and paddleboards, gardening tools, or patio furniture. This will leave space in the other storage areas in your home and garage for more fragile items like documents, photos, upholstered items, or flammable items (like propane tanks, camping stoves, etc) which we don’t suggest you store in your crawl space.

Label Label Label

What can we say, we love to label!  We understand that not everyone wants to label all areas of their home, but it is so important to label the bins in your crawl space. Since it isn’t somewhere you will go to often, it is easy to forget what is in which bin. Having clear, easily readable labels will save you the frustration of not being able to find what you’re looking for.

The key to using your crawl space for storage is to have a plan. A well-organized crawl space can be a blessing, as long as it doesn’t become a dumping ground, and our team of professional organizers is here to help.
