Decluttering and organizing trends come and go, but we think these five are here to stay!
Eco-friendly Organizing Trends
Eco-friendly organizing trends emphasizing sustainability and mindful consumption are gaining significant traction. Key aspects of these organizing trends include utilizing storage solutions made from renewable materials like bamboo or recycled plastics, and embracing upcycling by repurposing existing items such as old crates or furniture.
Repurpose
Before rushing to the store to buy new organizing items like bins, boxes and baskets, have a look around your home and see what can be repurposed. Glass mason jars (like the ones Last Mountain sells its raspberry jam in at Costco) can be used to store dry goods in your pantry or craft items like beads. The bonus? Their labels are easy to peel off, and there’s no residue left over!

Consign
Consigning is a great way to reduce clutter in your closet and ensure your wardrobe isn’t dated or stagnant. There are so many great consignment stores around Vancouver that it is easy to find one that suits your needs and style.
Make it a habit to declutter your closet twice a year (or even each season), and remove any items you haven’t worn in the last 6 months. Selling to and buying from consignment stores will help you save money and ensure your pre-loved clothing will continue to bring someone else joy rather than ending up in a landfill.
Go for Quality
While it is tempting to buy cheaper plastic organizers, they often don’t last. Consider more durable, long-lasting, eco-friendly organizers, such as bamboo, wood, or stainless steel.
Digital Decluttering and Organizing Trends
Digital organizing trends are also on the rise, reducing paper waste, but digital clutter and disorganization can be a source of stress for many people. Thousands of emails, non-stop app notifications and incessant pop-ups have become the norm in many of our lives. But, it doesn’t have to be this way.
The digital decluttering trend is picking up steam, and for good reason. It seems like everywhere we turn, we are asked for our email address.
How do you stay on top of it?
Emails
- Set aside 30 minutes a week to do a digital declutter. Go through your inbox and unsubscribe from promotional emails that do not interest you.
- Delete emails as soon as you’ve read them.
- Aim for Inbox Zero (getting, and keeping your inbox at 0!)
- Set up email filters and rules to help keep your inbox organized.
Apps
- Uninstall rarely-used apps to reduce the amount of storage space you’re using on your device and also reduce distractions.
- Turn off pop-ups and notifications.
- Prioritize essential apps and keep them displayed on your home screen while organizing your other apps into folders.
Social Media
- Go through your following list regularly and delete or snooze any accounts you are no longer interested in following.
- Uninstall apps and only access your social media from a laptop or desktop to stop the doom scroll.
- Do a digital detox – schedule breaks where you are not on social media (for example, make Sundays social media-free days!) Figure out what works for you and stick with it.

Smart Home Organizing Trends
Integrating technology into our everyday lives is meant to improve efficiency and productivity and enhance various aspects of our lives.
Many of us use Smart Lighting, Smart Thermostats and Security Systems to give us peace of mind within our homes, so why not also use technologies that can help keep our homes organized?
- Vacuum storage bags are a simple way to maximize space by storing items like out-of-season clothing and extra linens and bedding.
- Scanners are a great way to help reduce your paper clutter. Use them to digitize all your documents, photos, and even children’s artwork. Depending on your needs, you can add a smart scanner to your office equipment or download one of the many scanner apps to your phone.
- Organizing Apps like Todoist and Sortly can be instrumental in organizing your home. Todoist helps you streamline your tasks, add deadlines, check off tasks as they’re completed, and invite others to do the tasks with you. Sortly tracks and itemizes the items in your home and their locations.
Family Organizer apps, such as Timetree or Cozi help you organize busy schedules to ensure the whole family is on the same page and nothing gets missed.
