Closet organizers Vancouver – Harmony Home Organizing

In our hectic and busy lives, it’s not uncommon for our closets, drawers, and desks to become overstuffed, disorganized, and cluttered. It seems like everything is more urgent. Thus, staying organized often takes an absence to the more immediately-gratifying aspects of our lives, like work and spending time with our loved ones. But eventually, we hit a point where our lack of organization starts affecting our ability to operate efficiently. From finding your favourite shirt to locating important documents, a disorganized closet indicates a disorganized life.

If you’re having trouble carving out time for such an overwhelming yet game-changing task, then you might consider hiring a professional organizer who can get you back on track in no time.

But if you care to tackle it on your own, in this article, we’re going to provide 6 helpful tips on how to stay organized like a pro!

1. Take everything out of your closet

Organizing your closet is like building a puzzle. You need to take everything out to see all the “pieces” you’re working with. Only then can you begin figuring out what goes where. I usually start by laying everything out onto a clean, flat surface like a bed.

Consider covering your bed in case your closet items are a bit dusty.

2. Sort your items

Create categories or “bins” into which you can sort your items. For example, I usually create 3 categories: Keep, Donate, and Discard. You might also consider a “Return” or “Sell” category. But the key to organization is a willingness to let go of items that no longer serve you and declutter.

3. Move items to their rightful place

Regardless of whether you live in a small or spacious place, you might find it necessary or convenient to use a closet for multiple purposes, like clothing, jewellery, tax documents, etc. It’s easy to become absent-minded and stuff these things into a closet because it’s “safe” and you’re in a hurry. But take the time to return them to their rightful place while organizing.

4. Find a home for each category

Group items by category and keep them together. We mentioned categories like keep, donate/sell, and discard. But these categories are a little more zoomed in than that. For example, create further subcategories for the items that you’ve decided to “keep”. Have a place for your out-of-season clothes, and make sure your most frequently used clothes are easily accessible. Use storage bins/baskets, preferably transparent (or labelled), and place like items together.

5. Clean your closet

Organization also involves cleanliness. So, after you’ve removed all items from your closet(s), be sure to sweep, vacuum, wipe, and/or mop the area before placing your items back inside and organizing them.

6. Be consistent when organizing your items

When trying to become more organized, it’s the little things that’ll take you far. For example, when hanging up your clothes, ensure that they’re all facing the same way to make it easier when you’re trying to select what to wear. I like to use non-slip velvet hangers to keep items from slipping and falling, which can slowly lead to disorganization.

When it comes to office clothing, I find that wooden hangers are sturdier and well-equipped to support heavier and/or delicate items like office clothes, including jackets, blazers, and blouses, and shirts. As a nice touch, for children’s clothing, I use small, colourful hangers. Kids love them!
Moreover, certain items, like sweaters, are better off folded to avoid stretching and wrinkling.

More organizing tips

• Keep the items that you use most often at eye level

• Think of your closet as real estate. Put your least frequented items in the least frequented, or hard-to-access places, like up top. And place your second-tier items below.

• Avoid mixing up your clothes by using drawer dividers to separate like clothing into categories.

At the end of the day, organizing your closet involves prioritizing, sorting, and getting rid of unneeded items. That being said, not everyone has the luxury of time, which is why disorganization and cluttered closets occur in the first place.

But don’t worry! There are professional organizers who can completely take over this overwhelming process. Only once your closets and home are organized, will you be able to appreciate the value of staying organized.

To eliminate time constraints, get in contact with a professional organizer and bring order to your everyday life!
