How to Organize Your Child’s Room

If you have children, you know how quickly their bedrooms can become disorganized. Children grow fast, making it necessary to sort through and declutter their clothing, toys, and books often. We have helped many families in Vancouver organize their children’s rooms and have gathered some tips to help you stay organized.

Keep It Interesting

Children’s interests shift quickly as they grow. To keep them interested in their toys, swap the toys out periodically. Store half in a bin, and every month or so, swap out the toys. This will also help you determine which toys are their absolute favourites and which ones in which they’ve lost interest.

One In One Out

Not only will swapping out toys help keep it interesting, but it will also help you follow the One In One Out rule which is as simple as it sounds. When they receive a new toy, an old one gets given away. Help your child select one toy they have outgrown or are no longer interested in, and swap it out.

Sort Clothing by Size

Keep only the clothing your children currently fit in their closets and dressers and store the larger sizes. When they’ve outgrown the clothes in their closet it will be extremely easy to swap them out. We like to use these bags and store them in a closet or under the bed or crib.

Just as with toys, interest in books will change as well. The best solution for this is to keep the collection of books to a minimum and use your local library to discover new books. A small bookshelf such as this IKEA Billy Bookcase is a great addition to any child’s room. Adding baskets or bins will provide a little extra storage as well.

Closet Organizers

Consider expanding the storage space in your child’s closet. Most closets have one shelf and one hanging rod, leaving a lot of valuable space unused. If you are stuck for ideas Pinterest is a great place to look for inspiration for closet organization.

Involve Your Children

When you involve your children in organizing you teach them organizational skills that will stay with them throughout life. Encouraging them to donate their unused books, toys, and clothing also fosters a sense of community and giving.
